My Kuya’s Wedding – Ryan Agoncillo, Maja Salvador

(disclaimer: once again, the image was taken from Google Images)

I saw the DVD of the indie film Umaaraw, Umuulan in Astrovision some weeks ago. The cover looked simple with only Ryan Agoncillo drenched in the rain and holding a book over his head but he looked absolutely hot and all, so I started looking for it online. The reviews weren’t too good so I didn’t feel like watching it anymore but I still wanted to watch Ryan Agoncillo in a movie that did not involve Judy Ann Santos (although I know she still had a cameo in Umaaraw Umuulan). I mean, I do believe they’re very happy together and I support that but I still don’t think they look good together. I appreciated Kasal, Kasali, Kasalo and its sequel because they were good movies. Anyway, it was too bad that Umaaraw, Umuulan kind of sucked because even though I don’t really like Precious Lara Quigaman (his leading lady there), I had a feeling they would be “aesthetically pleasing” together. To try and satisfy my Ryan Agoncillo craving, I searched his name in crunchyroll to see if he had other movies uploaded. Then, I saw My Kuya’s Wedding. I remember telling my sister when we saw its poster before, when it came out, that Maja Salvador and Ryan Agoncillo look more like lovers than siblings. So I had a feeling it would probably bother me watching them as siblings in the movie. Pauleen Luna played his fiancee and I was also thinking they did not look good together. I saw all the comments in crunchyroll, which were mostly positive. They all said it was good, relatable, and even cry-able. So I decided to try watching the first part at least, JUST for Ryan Agoncillo. Hehe!

The first part was kind of disturbing, with Jeff, the brother, and Kat, the sister, as kids. Kat poured water at a girl who wanted to date her brother. It was then mentioned that she did that with all the girls who liked him. Later on, they grow up into Maja as Kat and Ryan as Jeff. Kat throws water at the girl who, again, wanted to go on a date with Jeff and tells her that he can’t go because he’s taking her to the prom. I was thinking “Why would she actually, really WANT her brother to take her to her prom? Maybe she likes him a little too much…” It felt scandalous but I kept watching. I’m going to admit that I might have a thing for incest stories too (it started with Peter/Claire in heroes and Justin/Rebecca in Brothers and Sisters) but it’s only interesting in fiction, not real life, eww. I mean, why the hell do they make actors with sexual chemistry related in shows? Anyway, going back to the topic… The story actually seemed nice and I really felt for the characters. I felt the bond and the pain their going through. I planned to only watch the first part but I couldn’t stop watching once I started.

It was actually a lot like My Best Friend’s wedding. They based a lot of stuff from that film and My Best Friend’s Wedding was probably done better but My Kuya’s Wedding definitely affected me more. I guess it could be because I related more with it. I DO have two brothers, who are both married now, although I never tried to ruin their weddings. I did feel sad, however, when I realized they were actually leaving our house. I felt like I was losing them then. The film was also able to show the closeness and the love between the siblings. I was excited along with Kat when she found out her brother was coming back from abroad and I was annoyed along with her when his fiancee, Heidi, showed up with him in the airport. How come he never even mentioned anything over the phone? It really pissed me off too. And then Heidi was acting as if she knew him better, loved him more, etc. (I really hated her). Jeff was being completely neglectful of Kat too. So even though it was wrong to try and destroy their relationship, I really understood what she was doing and I would’ve done it too.

I never expected it, but the third part really brought me to tears… a lot of tears. Believe me, that does not happen often. It’s surprising that it was even from a movie that’s supposed to be light and fun. I was so affected by the dramatic moments that even when they tried to move on to the funnier scenes, I was still crying and sobbing so much. Everyone got mad at Kat, of course, when she admitted what she did and she never even fought back to defend herself. She was just really sorry and taking all the blame. I wanted to fight for her, in fact I wanted her to succeed in her plans (nyahaha!). Well, the ending was still nice and happy so it’s all good.

I just have to say that I really respect Maja Salvador as an actress now. She was very good and full of energy. I never thought she would be awesome in comedy as well, I was very impressed. She does deserve the lead role. Ryan Agoncillo was also good. I don’t think his character required much from him though. Pauleen Luna wasn’t bad either. She was super nice as her character was supposed to be and it was annoying as hell, which I think might be the point. I STILL think she has no chemistry with Ryan Agoncillo. Jason Abalos’ was kind of blah… his character was kind of, as I would call it in Filipino, “epal,” which means like someone who’s unnecessarily butting in, but it was funny how they made his character into this completely conceited jerk in a not-too-cliche manner. Like when people were asking for his autograph he asked one of them, “Crush mo ko? (Do you have a crush on me?)” He was supposed to be an evicted housemate from a Big Brother type of show. He was voted out because people hated him even though he’s “hot.” I guess he was important too when he was trying to help out and talk to Kat. What made him unnecessary was that he seemed to be included in the movie just to give Maja a love interest.

To sum up, it’s sort of a rip off of My Best Friends Wedding but I think it’s still worth it. Well, just for the Maja or Ryan hotness, it’s worth it but I think the movie is really good too so I highly recommend it. So watch now!

Pasan Ko ang Daigdig – Sharon Cuneta, Tonton Gutierrez

Oh no, a Lino Brocka classic… I have to be careful.

I saw my sister watching this in (of course, my fave channel since last month) PBO. No, I wasn’t able to watch from the start but the first thing I have to say about the parts I were able to catch, bad editing! I can’t even explain how, it’s just really bad. The transitions weren’t smooth and some scenes looked random and unnecessary because of it, especially the singing parts. Or is PBO cutting out some scenes and doing a bad job of it?

The story was not bad though. The theme is a lot darker and deeper compared to the commercial films that have been coming out nowadays. The acting was effective, except for Tonton (but that was a long time ago). There wasn’t much chemistry between him and Sharon either. Sharon’s portrayal was moving actually. Lupe was such a strong character. You can understand why she’s doing everything she’s doing, except in the end maybe, but I’ll say more about that later.

There was a lot of drama, rape, whipping (literally), murder, and Sharon gold-digging, which made me wonder if all this also happened in the remake with Yasmien Kurdi. Yeah, fun!

The Mark Gil hotness was a great bonus too. In fact, my sister and I were both rooting for his character to end up with her even though he was supposed to be the bad guy who “raped” her, but turned out he didn’t. Hello! Chemistry! Good girl-bad boy combo!

But then, I also felt for Tonton’s character, who was supposed to be the good guy that “sincerely” loved her and her baby… before I found out he was the one who ACTUALLY raped Sharon’s character and was the father of her child. In the end, she left the dirty old man she was going to marry and decided to be with Tonton’s character. I can’t imagine forgiving a guy who did what he did and lied about it, but if that’s what she wants… she’s an idiot. How can you love a guy who raped you?? Even if he DOES love you… But then, if he loves you, why would he take advantage?! I can’t believe a Filipino film, a SHARON CUNETA film, ended up that way. Interesting…

I Missed HappySlip

She was here in the Philippines and I didn’t get the chance to see her or anything. I just saw an interview with her on QTV and I suddenly realized how fun it would have been to actually meet her. They showed how she even did her characters on stage in the Meet and Greet. Gotta love her, eh? It is true that Filipinos can really relate to most of the things in her videos. Her family is just like my family.

Days after the Meet and Greet, I found out my cousin was actually the emcee of the event. I didn’t believe it at first but I just saw him on TV when they showed the Meet and Greet. Lucky guy…

Gossip Girl Fashion

(disclaimer: images were found in google, as usual)

I love the clothes in Gossip Girl. It’s cool how they’re all differentiated for each character. I can’t say I like one character’s style more than the others though. Serena’s, as they said, “rolled out of bed” look is more my style but I can’t say I can carry it as well as her. I do go for the “sabog/wasted” look from time to time, especially when I do feel like crap. The thing with Serena’s character is that she is so gorgeous that she would good in ANYTHING. Blair’s style is more classic, clean lines, “Audrey Hepburn.” I’ve learned to love it as well. She can wear something that looks too mature for her age but make it more youthful with her headbands. I’m crazy for headbands right now. I just bought two more in Greenhills last Friday. My sister wore the black one with the bow in the Ateneo Prom. I also got a thin yellow one, similar to Blair’s from the pilot. Got them for P35 each.

Gossip Girl: Dan & Blair

I’ve said before that I like alternate pairings and Dan/Blair is definitely one of my favorites right now. Believe it or not, I thought of it while I was reading the books even before the show. The last one I read was Nothing Can Keep Us Together and out of eight books I’ve read, they’ve only actually talked ONCE. It wasn’t even an actual conversation, it was just Blair telling Dan “I’m not in love with you. I don’t even know you,” when Serena and Vanessa were sort of teasing Dan and Serena said “Everybody’s in love with Dan!” The line was so funny though, and I think that’s what made me think they’d be cute together. At least in the show they have more scenes together. And their exchanges are quite funny…

“There’s a garage door in the middle of this room! Aww… Is that Cedric?”

“See you later, Waldorf.”

Blair just has to keep referring to Cedric, the cabbage patch, whenever Dan is brought up. It’s cute how they have that thing between them. And you gotta love a good love-hate relationship… I’m not saying they should hook up right now. It’s still too complicated with Serena, Nate, and Chuck. I’m just wishing they’d have more scenes together, friendship scenes at least. Like their scene in Bad News Blair, when Dan opened up to her.

I know everyone’s into Chuck/Blair right now. I also liked the idea when the Victor, Victrola episode first came out. But there’s so much people into it now that I’ve lost interest already. I do think Dan and Serena are cute together. I can’t hate them, even when they can be boring. So I’m not bashing any other pairings. It’s just fun to have all these options… Hehe!

Yes!! Finally! I’m hoping to see more Gossip Girl episodes this year, as well as Brothers and Sisters. The writers got at least two of their three points. They’re getting part of the revenue from digital sales. So I hope they’re happy and the fans will be getting their shows back! Yipee!

Manga Time: Good Morning Call

I’m currently reading this Japanese manga online in http://www.mangavolume.com. I think out of all the mangas I’ve tried reading, I’m really enjoying this the most. It’s a shoujo manga and the story revolves around a junior high girl and guy who are forced to live together by themselves. It’s sort of like Full House but with teenagers (I happen to like high school drama). It’s very cute and funny. The pacing is also good. I can almost see it happening. I like the art and the characters as well.

There are some mangas that turn weird eh. Like at first it’s good but later on something happens that just makes me go, “huh?” Or sometimes when I read the synopsis, the story seems really interesting but when I start reading I get bored.  There’s something wrong that I can’t pinpoint. Like I can’t imagine watching it actually happening. I guess it could be because I’m more of a live action fan. When I read mangas, I end up trying to imagine how it would look like on screen. Manga can be very different. I’m probably just not used to the format yet.

By the way, can anyone recommend a good angsty/dramatic manga? As in, Taiyou no Uta type but without the incurable illness. I will appreciate suggestions. Thanks!

Kung Fu Kids

To be honest, I started watching because of my ongoing Eigenmann family fixation. Sid Lucero, whose father is Mark Gil, is in Kung Fu Kids as the Krung guy. He’s my current fave, he kinda resembles Yamada Takayuki (hot Japanese actor). I think I mentioned I like the good boy, kind-looking type. And Sid’s also such a great actor.

I’m enjoying the show naman. I love all the cute kids! Especially Chubbs and Lem!! And all the kiddie love teams… I’m trying to ignore the bad special effects. It feels kind of slow paced as well. I want to see the kids become a team already! Oh and it’s cute how they gave Sid’s character a love interest (with kissing scenes and all) in the past but then why does it have to be Mariel Rodriguez?! I’m sorry but I really dislike her.

Filipino Showbiz News

This is just a random rant about how stupid local showbiz news can be? Particularly, Chika Minute from 24 Oras and Star Patrol (?) from TV Patrol. Sometimes it’s just so obvious that they’re running out of stories so they’d just put anything out there as long as it’s about a celebrity. I mean sometimes I’m just like “SO WHAT?!!” I don’t care if this girl, who is actually part of the cast of a show, is there during the filming of a kissing scene of her leading man (nope, not even her boyfriend) with another girl. They’re gonna use words in the headlines such as “jealousy,” “love triangle,” etc. but then you when they show the interviews, all the celebs involved will just deny having any love issues with each other. They’ll point out that they their working relationship is very professional and they don’t allow themselves to start relationships with coworkers. Of course, the girl is only there during the filming because she is part of the show and who is she to watch over this guy she might have a crush on when they’re not even in relationship yet? Wow! How enriching! I feel like I’ve become a better human being knowing those things (straight face). You know what? I love gossip, I do, but… Anyway, in the end all they’re trying to do is to promote the TV show. Like last night, they had this news about the kissing scene of Marian Rivera and Richard Gutierrez in their new movie. I don’t think there was anything special about the kissing scene, was there? I mean, for them to make such a big deal out of it? So yeah, they’re just trying to promote the movie.

Die Crocs!

(just found this on youtube)

I know it’s mean but I totally judge people I see wearing Crocs. No matter how hot you are, no one can carry them. They don’t even look good with anything. So what if they’re comfortable? Lots of other NICER shoes are comfortable. I just don’t think they’re worth it. They’re so ugly and stupid (and what’s with the holes?)… and I heard they’re dangerous too. There’s this Crocs store in Megamall and it had to be right by the escalator, ironic. I will accept people who wear them privately, like in the bathroom or watering plants in a hidden garden. The flats version aren’t too bad either… from afar. But yeah, if you don’t want to look like an idiot, don’t wear Crocs out in public.
